Cloud information, mobile technologies, big data and social networks are most important trends of our era.  Do required virtualization solutions for these trends have the importance in our county and all over the world?

Technology world has been moving into cloud rapidly. One of the main reasons is that social networks have become one of our counterparts of our daily and business lives. Mobile and cloud information continue to develop in this direction. From the private sector point of view, we can see that advertisements, solutions and operations shift into cloud information where social media and accessibility are high. The countries which are leader in technological field are aware of that virtualization solutions depend on these technologies and they show great effort to use this field efficiently that they consider as a gold mine. In our country, corporate companies and some governmental institiutions have taken necessary steps in order to catch up with recent developments. However since we are not the country producing the technology but using the technology, we can say that we are always one step back from the others.

Reports are saying that network virtualization solutions will change Telecom industry completely. Do you agree with this forecast considering Turkey and world markets?

Network virtualization solutions will result in significant development in Telecom industry and decreasing in installation and maintenance costs (capex-opex). Because by this way, just as in server virtualization technologies, you can get way bigger capacities with less physical sources.  This situation is caused by the fact that software operations (operating systems, TCP-IP) performance and competencies cannot yet reach performance figures that their hardware provides.  Especially for telecom sector, network virtualization will open up a new era. For example; corporate backbone switches can load data up to 80 Tbps. This figure is the highest value that a telecom company can never achieve. A telecom company serving average 50 Mbps service to the customers can serve up to 380.000 customers with this device. However, a VLAN must be established for each customer.  By TCP/IP technology, maximum 4096 LAN can be used on one device. It should be so since 12 bit area is dedicated for VLAN in TCP/IP package structure. In other words, instead of 380.000 customers on one single device, we can only serve for 4096 customers.  In order to overcome such problems, manufacturer companies have developed technologies to divide high capacity devices into virtual devices so-called CONTEXT.  These technologies are called differently according to the manufacturers. They create multiple switches on physical backbone switches and they can be used as individual physical switches. Existing technologies can divide one physical switch into 8 virtual switches. This enables us to use our switches that we cannot use at full performance more efficiently; we can make everything that we can make by 8 switches by 1 switch.  These technologies can be used by similar names in not only switches but also in other devices such as firewall, IPS, Load Balancer..etc. For example, virtualization technology in some firewall devices is called Virtual Context and a physical device can be divided into 50 virtual devices. Thanks to developments in network virtualization technologies, system service centers of telecom companies which are thousands of square meters can be reduced to 10 square meters. Costs will be reduced in parallel to this.

Stagnation is observed in growth rate of EMEA server virtualization. However, income from virtualization software has been increasing. Can you assess future of this market?

Although growth rate in EMEA region server virtualization market decreased as compared to last years, server virtualization rate continues to rise.  We think that main reason is that virtualizable physical servers among the sector are being already operated in virtual environments. Server virtualization has already been adopted by sector professionals and it has reached saturation point.

In addition, we think that small and middle size enterprises will return cloud services such as iaas, paas, saas enabling high accessibility instead of having a physical server. Virtualization softwares will be in better position tomorrow since they reduce licence costs, minimize update, back-up and security concerns.

Can you explain importance and role of virtualization in data security which is one of the main topics recently? Can you compare virtualized environments with physical environments in terms of security?

Intranets and Internet has been used more and more day by day. Therefore, not losing your data is important but it is also quite important that your data must not be possessed with somebody else. Essence of the matter, a virtual machine has same security risks with a physical machine. The advantage of virtualized environments against physical environments is hypervisor which we can say an additional security layer. Today, we can run antivirus, ips, ids, firewall and log check processes via hypervisor without uploading any agent into virtual machines. These can be considered as advantages in comparison with physical environments.  Besides that, regardless of physical or virtual machine; if it connects to the network via physical or software network, it is always under the risk.
