What will be the new trends in the field with the SSDs now become common?
With the decrease in the cost per GB which was the most important factor for the SSD discs to be common, this prejudice was overcome and SSD are now seen even in laptop systems. We are at the marginal point where flash-based discs can ever reach with silicon technologies. Ineffectiveness and instability in the production under 20nm, the near impossibility to exceed 20nm barrier forced the manufacturers to seek other avenues. After SLC and MLC type chips, now we are talking about TLC (TriLevelCell) chips. But it’s still not enough. Flash/NAND-based technologies will now grow vertically rather than horizontally. The future of flash technologies lies in RRAM, PCM, MRAM, and FeRAM technologies. Just like with the embedded and mobile systems, we will see DIMM data storage spaces, main board integrated flash units, and discs located in PCIe architecture on the servers and desktops system, even in data storage units. Developers such as HP, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, and Texas Instruments will overcome the technologic recession emerged from 20nm barrier by this means. Besides, flash units are now manufactured in high capacity, and institutions and organizations who suffer from power consumption/productivity difficulties and/or lack of space in the system room are able to purchase more productive, high capacity domains with less space at lower total purchase cost. Units that offer lower performances reached an adequate capacity in terms of cold storage, and caught up with the total cost of mechanical discs. Storage units that are manufactured based on flash-based discs for performance as well as storage purposes now are not unattainable. Giants like Facebook and Amazon now direct the manufacturers to produce not faster but higher capacity and cost-effective SSDs. On the other hand, things go faster on manufacturers’ part of the sector. There are about 500 companies worldwide, operating on flash-based technologies, and 7 of top 10 companies in the sector have been acquired by another company. This gives us an idea on how important flash based technologies have become. The logic “I can’t afford SSD” is history, now the new understanding is “I can’t afford not using SSD”.
What are the new trends in data storage, since cloud informatics is now in our lives?
Data storage, one of the basic factors that cloud informatics relies on in its progress has perhaps become the most critical component in cloud architecture, since virtualization which was long employed on the server and client side is now employed for data storage. As most critical component, abilities of the data storage either hinder or enhance the abilities of cloud architecture. The new trend in the cloud architecture is toward systems that are skilled, scalable, and operable integrally in management layer. It’s possible now to manage the servers system via virtualization settings such as Vmware, Hyper-V, etc. The days where various resources were required for management level in the data storage and application layer are long gone. Now there are system managers only who manage the virtualized settings, and are not limited to single product group. The trend in the sector is more effective use of resource, decrease in the workload of the employees, integration of information technologies in all levels, access and performance improvement. In 2014, flash-based systems will be used in replications and products that have cluster abilities. Added value of the SSD will increase on cloud informatics part by means of layering technology. Being the most recessed part of the informatics technologies, backup is an obstacle that needs to be overcome for cloud informatics. The concept of Software Defined will be more important for data storage and cloud informatics. As the cost of cloud architecture declines, complicacy and abilities of it will increase.
What do you advice companies and organization do about their investments on data storage?
I advise them to invest on what we called Unified/Converged systems that are scalable and easy-to manage rather than on solutions that might save the day. Uncontrollable growth rate of the data as well as increasing need for performance could only be satisfied by such systems. Modular structures, virtualized and/or unified systems should be selected. Physical properties of disc systems such as cash memory, disc number etc, as well as expansion options, integration with virtualization media, management software skills, and innovations that will bring on data optimization should be considered during selection stage.
How can security need that increases with the increase in the stored data be met, what do you suggest?
It’s possible to back-up and store the increasing data in environments that are separated physically as well as logically. There are some technologies provided by data storage systems to store the data safely under applicable laws, that allow controlled access to the data, and that provide protection against changes and/or deletion. Apart from these, there are also virtual tape libraries developed as alternative to tape units that allow long-term data storage in a physical environment away from remote access. It’s important to set your needs right and to procure the right product that ensures the right solution. Today we have all hardware and software that ensure the protection of data in every way there is.
HP 3PAR is in the top 4 in Ankara!
The first demonstration of HP 3PAR StoreServ 7200 that offers data storage solutions to organizations is being offered for the first time in Technology Solution Center of 4S Bilgi Teknolojileri in Bilkent, Ankara. Able to consolidate the data that were previously required to be stored in various platforms under single platform by using 60% -20% lower disc capacity HP 3PAR decreases the initial cost of purchase, capacity enhancement cost, management costs, data center space costs, power and cooling costs of the organizations. Thus, HP 3PAR decreases the total cost of purchase by 50% while it ensures to see the returns of the investments in 12 to 18 months. İlker Rodoplu, Country Manager of HP Turkey Data Storage Systems, stated that through HP 3PAR data storage systems critical and complex work loads of over 200 customers across Turkey are monitored by 7×24 HP engineers by remote access. Rodoplu; “PoC (demo) works we conducted with our customers showed 100% sales and this indicates that the revealed technical properties are the differences that turned into added value in the rivalry rather than be just on the paper. So, thanks to our demo investment we made with 4S, our customers will be able to test our added value projects we promised to ensure, and act more comfortably and safely about technology renewal with help of the training and data transportation service to be provided by professional 4S engineers”.
Ertan Erdemir, Vice President of 4S Bilgi Teknolojileri, pointed out that 4S will continue to invest in new technologies and that their customers will have the opportunity to test and to get familiar with those new technologies through Technology Solution Center.
