Turkish Republic Ministry of Internal Affairs General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs (NVİ) executes the greatest and vital projects of Turkey with respect to e-government applications such as Mernis, Identity Sharing System (KPS) and Address Registry System (AKS) successfully. NVİ is one of the organizations that come into mind when it comes to “Data” in Turkey.
IT Branch Office Manager Fuat Oğuzoğlu said “957 Township Population Directorates are connected to NVİ General Directorate serves via Mernis application and over three thousand public organizations and institutions and other institutions take service over KPS and web services within day time.” He pointed out importance of business continuity for the organization.
Oğuzoğlu mentioned that the organization works with 7/24 principle and the service must be given as soon as possible. He continued “Entire population and address data of Turkey is currently kept on EMC Symmetrix family storage systems used in our Ankara and Konya data centres. These systems have been operating without any interruption until now since 2000 when they first started to be used in our organization.”
25 million operations being done daily
Oğuzoğlu mentioned that they can execute approximately 25 million operations daily with a high performance and they can serve uninterruptedly; he said that “data replication between two centres is being done from disc to disc over these systems effectively in order to make Ankara and Konya data centres consistent with each other. Besides that, Spatial Address Registry System will be commissioned at the end of this year to store geographical information system data; and via Identity Card Expansion Project ,biometric data and photographs of our citizens can be stored in our organizations to an extend that law permits.”
Oğuzoğlu also drew attention that data amount and diversity is growing so fast therefore it is very important to keep the data available continuously. He also mentioned that this data structure should be scaled continuously with respect to capacity, performance. It is essential to meet todays and future expectations.
Back-up is not a problem anymore thanks to EMC Avamar
IT Manager Fuat Oğuzoğlu stated that it is vitally important for NVİ that all data should be backed up correctly and recovery should be done if needed. He said “We back up all our data in EMC Datadomain virtual tape library since 2011. We got rid of tapes completely. We reduced complete back-up time to ¼ of backup time that we used to have with tape. Back-up is not a problem for us anymore. We back up our entire virtual infrastructures with E
