Solid State Drive is one of popular storage technologies today. Thanks to technology development and massive production economy, this technology has reached to our desktops and laptops. Actually it is not new for many of us like you thought.
Solid State Drives has been using in several tailor-made computers since 1950; it has started to be used in open systems just before 2000. Qauntum which is known by its hard discs and tapes has launched first generation Rushmore series SCSI connected Solid State Disks in 1995. Third generation was released in 2000. These drives have been sold by OEM such as Compaq, Digital, HP and IBM server manufacturer companies. Capacities were varying from 134 MB to 1.6 GB. As performance figures, they were providing access time less than 25 µs, 18,000 IOPS performance and band width over 70 MB/s. Since SCSI data path bandwidth that these devices are connected is 40 MB/s, discs performance was not fitting into connection interface. They were promising more than hundred times performance as compared to then hard discs. Eh, performance has a price; 1.6 GB disc was only $39.000.
This is the cheap one. 1.07 GB capacity Quantum Rushmore was $28.000, its size was Full Height 5.25″ dock.
I will not continue with that new generation performance has increased to that much; You can follow that which brand is more speedy, what their capacities are.. via Fastest SSD website. Although products that I got interested in and shared have been changed; architectures established by Solid State drives have remained same in corporate structures.
Today, you will see that more or less same topology has been used in Solid State usage in corporate structures. Corporate Solid State Disk Array manufacturers recommend their products for database index areas, areas where virtual desktops are kept, storage areas which are frequently accessed.
Although it provides same architecture, during past years the technology was not attractive. However, it has become popular technology after a decade. There was no virtualization concept, data sizes were relatively small, high bandwidth production has cost advantage. These are main reasons for that. Probably, wave concept in economy is highlighting here. We should not be ahead of wave, behind of the wave but we have to be on top of it.
