What is the cost significance in data storage for the companies?

As in all IT components, cost is an important item in data storage systems. However, when it comes to the data addressing corporate business needs; secure storage and continuos accessibility is highlighted. Corporates can be flexible to hold required costs in order to sustain their data assets as compared to other IT components. For example, there are many corporates purchasing 2 spare servers in an IT solution with 4 servers need. On the other hand, they create a structure similar to RAID6 by using two equivalent discs in a purchased disc system and obtain 4 disc capacities out of 6 discs. This is quite normal today. Storage solutions with one-to-one backup are very common in a single system or equivalent storage systems.

What are the latest technologies and solutions in data storage field?

Smart storage systems have been emerging in data storage field. In the past we have seen that disk systems having self-audit unit have replaced JBOD unaudited disc drawers. New generation storage systems featuring layering on data, singularization, virtualization, providing access via different protocols and crypting have started to replace audited storage systems having RAID or similar block-based abilities. These systems are more beneficial for the users since they use storage sources more efficiently.

We can easily talk about having TBs on a single disc in today’s disc storage technology. Most effective modification in disc storage has been solid state drive SSD technology providing superior performance. We think that, rotating harddiscs will be replaced by solid state drivers as technology. Maybe we will look at hard discs as we look at floppy discs today.

What are your expectations within upcoming decade for data storage solutions against increasing data?

There are two fundamental reasons for data growth. One is that old data still exists as back-up or archive in addition to live systems and new data is adding up constantly. Another reason is that items which were not considered as data in the past have become data and quality of this data increases. This increase will continue in the future. However, cloud technologies will be expanding and dominant also in data storage. In personal scale, services provided over internet have already started to be used in secure data centers instead of distributed systems. We think that similar structure will reflect on corporate applications and data storage solutions.
